The search for material. What attracts us to the mediums that we express ourselves with? Is it geographical, the accessible resources of our surroundings. A chance encounter? Or is it something more, a deeper feeling of connection with the medium?

Bamboo came into my life as discard from a neighboring studio. It began to develop into thoughts and ideas as the materials took up space in my workshop. After taking up space in my shop, the material began to take up space in my head as came to the process for implementing the medium in to my ideas and sculptures.

Cutting and reshaping the bamboo into a fluid, but unfamiliar form. What does the bamboo learn from the man made components, and how do the man made parts support the growth of the whole. What is given, what is given back.

By connecting the natural to man made I hope to explore our impact on the natural world and what that relationship look like moving forward thru the melding of worlds and materials.

The processing of bamboo. Cut from the ground, stripped of its leaves and branches. Chopped into regular sizes. Roasted over a fire and polished into stable, usable materials. Chopped down into component pieces, sanded and sorted. Does all this processing change it from something natural to something unnatural? At what point does it become man made?
